Funding for Arts and Culture in SA is a complex and timely process. And even when the arts project is finally granted the funding, the actual disbursement of cash is often delayed, leaving the project stranded without cash-flow or capital, whilst the wheels of admin slowly turn………
The Jack Hammer Mezzanine Fund for the Arts is a bridging finance facility, granted to arts projects which have received confirmation of funding, but are still waiting to receive the cash in hand. The loan is interest free, there are few (or no) forms to fill in, and the money is transferred in a matter of days.
Since inception, the Mezzanine Fund has supported the following projects:
- Some Mothers Sons – a play by Mike van Graan presented at the Baxter and Grahamstown Festival
- CAFDA Youth Dance Group – support for their tour to the Edinborough Festival
- Icon Photographic Group – a group of community photographers mentored by Garth Stead – support for their project as photographers of the ‘Homeless World Cup’
- Mamela Nyamza - internationally acclaimed contemporary dancer - support for her trip to Vienna where she was selected to participate in danceWeb 2008. Mamela was recently invited to participate in the "Superstar Dance of the World" competition in LA, prduced by Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller (Idol, So You Think You Can Dance producers), and reached the semi-final round of the competition!
